Preparing for T4s
Happy New Year everyone – and with that comes a new tax year! We know many of you are eager to get going on completing your 2021 tax return and we want to let you know that our Payroll staff are busy preparing T4s for our employees. We are targeting having T4s out prior to the end of February, but all current employees will receive their T4 via email by February 28th. As well, T4s for 2021 and prior years will be available on the AMS portal site (https://ams.abbyschools.ca/live/servlet/Broker). Once they are completed, you will be able to find your T4s here:
My Info --> Documents & eForms --> Employee Statement --> T4s
Please note that as of the date of this newsletter, 2021 T4s are not yet available. But the above menus give you direction to find them when they are ready and you can see prior years as well.
Specific questions about individual T4s should be forwarded to the Payroll Department. Some common questions are:
Why does Box 14 on my T4 slip not equal my year to date earnings on my last pay statement of the year?
- Box 14 includes year to date earnings and taxable benefits. All taxable benefits are also reported in box 40 on your T4 slip.
- Those amounts can be found on your final pay statement under the Earnings section in column “Year to Date”, bottom line “Earnings Total”.
- Taxable benefits YTD are shown near the top right of your pay statement just under the Pay Period End Date.
- Taxable Benefits include: Employer paid Group Life, Dependent Life, AD&D and EI rebate.
- Depending on your payroll you may have all of these taxable benefits, some of them, or none of these taxable benefits.
Why do I have two T4’s?
- Pay for Teachers, Support Staff, Admin, Causals, and TTOC’s are all processed separately as different earnings require
- different deductions and remittances to Revenue Canada. Separate T4’s are required for each Revenue Canada account.
- If you have a Teacher position and do TTOC work, or if you also worked Summer School – you will have 2 T4’s.
- If you were a Casual employee and had a Support position in the calendar year you will have 2 T4’s.
- If you were a Teacher and also an Administrator in the calendar year you will have 2 T4’s.
- If you are a Noon Hour Supervisor, Crossing guard and also do Casual work you will have 2 T4’s.
What is the amount in Box 52?
- This is the employee’s Pension Adjustment. It is calculated through Pensions BC for Teachers, TToCs, Admin and for Support Staff who participate in the Municipal Pension Plan.
- For Support Staff who participate in the Teamsters Pension Plan, it is the employer’s payment to their pension.
- Revenue Canada uses the Pension Adjustment to determine how much room an individual has to contribute to their RRSPs for the following year.
For Teachers this year, box 85 includes the employee’s portion of Extended Health Care and Dental premiums.
An example of a T4 and a description of all the boxes on a T4 is available here: Statement of Remuneration Paid (canada.ca)
